FELINE HIP DYSPLASIA

Feline Hip Dysplasia is not commonly thought of as a feline condition, but is just as serious and painful in cats as it is in dogs. It is an inherited trait involving multiple gene pairs and is not congenital; animals are not born with hip dysplasia. This disorder develops slowly over a period of time. Some of the symptoms of feline hip dysplasia are:

• Gradual decrease in movement or particular activities that cause pain. For example, jumping as high as usual, or moving more slowly than before;
• Ongoing dislike of being picked up; carried or being stretched as done as cat shows;
• Lack of motivation to move,limping;
• Lameness;
• Yowling or grumbling when lifted or handled;
• Stiffness;
• Sensitivity to touch in the hindquarters

Once again, I cannot stress the importance of regular veterinary visits. As you well know, most of the above symptoms can be associated with other diseases and disorders and only your veterinarian can determine the cause. To diagnose Feline Hip Dysplasia, your veterinarian will have to take an x-ray. Once the condition has been confirmed, the course of treatment that will best help your pet will be determined.
